Reasons I love Yorkshire.

Thursday, 2 August 2012

After my recent trip to America, there appears to be growing concern that I no longer love the place in which I live. I would like to put these rumours to rest, by sharing just a few reasons as to why my heart is still here, albiet with a piece in a America.

1) Yorkshire Tea. This obviously had to be top of my list as I actually cannot live without this proper brew.

2) Yorkshire Puddings. Don't think I need to elaborate on Yorkshire Folk's lifelong love affair with Yorkshire Pudding and gravy.

3) Hills. I love being surrounded by beautiful green hills. Not only do they burn my thighs when trying to climb home, they also gave me many a snow day whilst I was at school as I couldn't physically walk down the hill and wasn't willing to skate due to my inherent lack of balance.

4) Straight Talkers. You always know where you stand in Yorkshire. I love the outburst of 'Noooooooooooo?' when a statement is made that is absolutely absurd. We just can't hide our feelings, and always react before thinking. The involuntary reaction to a Tia Maria and Orange Juice costing £4.20 (which I still feel bitter about to this day) and a bus journey costing £2 is always to be expected in Yorkshire.

5) Yorkshire Dialect. I really dislike Michael Macintyres ridiculous attempt at a Yorkshire accent, whether it is for comedy value or not, it is highly inaccurate. We don't need THE, it's pointless and you won't find it here. I also love being called 'flower' by my bus driver and 'Ee, by gum.' The torment of the way I pronounce 'toast' seems to be popular with those from the rest of the country i.e. Not Yorkshire.

6) The Great Yorkshire Show. Great day out, Cath Kidston gazebo, local produce and sheep shows. What more can I say.

7) Hebden Bridge. The quirkiest town in the world, and my favourite part of Yorkshire. It is a haven of artists and the creative type, has some wonderful cafes and may or may not be full of drugs. This is my favourite shop

8) The posh parts...Harrogate. Harrogate boasts Bettys Tea Rooms, which is the only place a Yorkshireman would pay £2.50 for a cup of tea, because you generally only do it once in your life. Their raspberry macaroons are heaven on a plate.

9) Everything below Yorkshire is classed as 'the south.' I am not the only one who has said this and until I left Yorkshire to attend University, I did not realise this would cause offence, because it was all I'd ever heard. Soz.

10) Village life. I can't walk to the shop without knowing the majority of people I pass. When I passed my degree, I got a piece of paper through my door from my old Sunday School who had found out and had written a 'congratulations on getting a 2:1' section about me in their newsletter to send to their congregation, which now lives on my grandmas boiler. Things like that will never get old.

11) Halifax. My home town of wonder. Was once home to the man who leans on bins, who sadly leans no more. I am known in most coffee shops, (aka I am famous) just the other day I popped into Costa, and the new barista recognised me because I used to be in her old cafe, Neros "All the time". I recognised her straight away too. One time I came back from Uni and the old manager asked me where I had been. This means I am either very well known, or I spend too much time in coffee shops. I'll go for the first option. I also love how everybody goes for a wee in Marks and Spencer. I'm going there straight after I post this as they have recently been refurbished and have an automatic flush.

12) Community. Halifax in particular, has the best example of community I have ever seen. Enough said.

Now these are just a few, and you're probably thinking that it's not just Yorkshire that does all of this stuff. However, I have not spent time in your locality so am not at liberty to comment on it's quirks. I am born and bred in Yorkshire, and this is what I have experienced whilst dwelling in it. No matter where I go, or what beauty I behold, Yorkshire - you will always hold a piece of my heart and it is my joy to be a part of your beautiful hills.

What do you love about your home?

Much love xxx
